To begin understanding the magic of Ham Radio, let’s explore its frequency range. Unlike commercial radio stations situated at the lower end of the spectrum, Ham Radio operates just above local AM stations. While commercial stations utilize substantial power to extend their transmission distance, ham operators abide by the law’s restrictions, generally using around 100 watts for their stations.
One of the fascinating aspects of AM radio is its ability to “bounce” off certain atmospheric layers, allowing radio waves to travel in curved paths around the Earth. This feature makes AM preferred for long-range communication, especially during nighttime hours. In contrast, FM radio provides crystal-clear sound without static and works on a line-of-sight basis. FM waves travel straight into space without bending around the Earth’s curvature, necessitating the use of FM station repeaters for extended coverage.
Ham radio operators, however, have their own frequencies just above the commercial AM band, granting them reliable and versatile communication tools. During emergencies, when commercial stations may go offline, ham radio enthusiasts can rely on their equipment, often running on batteries or small generators. This ability to set up quickly and communicate with others in the area or hundreds of miles away becomes invaluable when other means of communication fail or become jammed.
For newcomers to ham radio, obtaining the Technician Class License opens the door to locally available FM frequencies for communication. Still, to access long-distance AM frequencies (HF or High Frequency), passing a technical test and obtaining a General Class license is necessary. Although Morse code is no longer required, learning CW can significantly expand one’s communication capabilities, especially in adverse propagation conditions where voice communication may not be feasible.
When entering the world of ham radio, it’s essential to seek guidance and education to become an asset rather than a liability. Radio stores or online retailers can provide the necessary equipment, but understanding what to buy and how to use it effectively is crucial. Local ham clubs and organizations like the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) are valuable resources for getting started, obtaining licensing, and ongoing support in this captivating hobby.
