Anyone who has ever owned a lighter or two probably have gotten it wet at least once before in their lives. I got a new plasma lighter and in this post, we will be reviewing the Explorer Plasma Lighter, this lighter even works after being dunked in water. The Explorer Plasma Lighter Review will go through the features and benefits of using this type of lighter.
Since there are so many new styles and many types of lighters on the market, we are able to find waterproof and windless lighters that don’t even need lighter fluid. These are sometimes electronic lighters and typically are plasma or torches types of lighter.
This lighter was mentioned just last week in our article: types of lighters and Best Plasma Lighters for Survival, or a cool lighter post on Vice I read earlier, so if you are wanting to check those out, there are some other really cool lighters!
Explorer Plasma Lighter Review and Waterproof Test
Now let’s get into it! Receiving the package, unboxing, and seeing it in a nice black and orange package, that looks like it would be a nice gift box, definitely something that would be cool to open up on Christmas day I thought.
What’s In The Box?
The company did a good job with the box presentation. Upon opening the package, you will see a card that has a diagram, just laying out the pieces of the lighter that you should know about.
On the back of the card, there will be instructions and the instructions are for the Double Arc Type of lighter. The product has a rated voltage of 3.7 voltages.
Charging Cable
The charge time for this is quick. They say it is less than 1 and a half hours however, mine was finished in 1 hour and 15 minutes from a dead battery, and it came pretty much out of juice.
Warnings
On the card it just suggests the things to avoid and obviously leaving any body part away from this style of lighter is common sense but if you were curious like I was, and wanted to touch the arc to see what it felt like, I will say do not do this as it is a pretty darn strong shock!
Features
Now with the product features:
- Waterproof – The rubber case, when closed and locked will prevent any water from ruining it or causing it not to work. If opened during the winter, and dropped into snow, picking it up and blowing off snow and this lighter will still work. If you drop it into the water when the top is opened, then you should expect it not to work in most cases.
- Windproof – Being a windproof lighter is a nice feature to have. On any windy day, press a button and ignite the flameless arc to the target you want to set fire to.
- Paracord Lanyard – With this paracord lanyard, you can wear a lighter around your neck. It has a clip to be able removed from the paracord lanyard to be easier to operate.
- Whistle – Having a survival whistle with this lighter is a really cool idea. It’s just something there you have just in case. If you get lost in the woods it could be handy and if you are a female it can also be used in an emergency to ward off an attacker, being heard to get some help.
Explorer Plasma Lighter Water Test
Here you will see the lighter dunked in a glass of water for approximately 1 minute. I pour out the water in the sink and get the lighter, unbuckle the latch, press the button to pop up the top of the lighter, and then press the button to ignite. As expected, it worked like a charm, and you can see in the second picture the water is just running off the lighter with an arc that is lit.
After the lighter has been submerged in water for this short period it seems to have no effect on the lighter, as it works well.
Final Thought
A decent lighter for a really affordable price, good quality, seems reliable so far, and which I have only used it about half a dozen times now, but to start fires in the wind, on the first day when testing this thing it went very well.
Another thing to think about is a way to have power when out camping for a few days in the woods. Some folks like to use solar panel power banks and these lighters seem to last for a long time before needing to be charged, but the battery life of this battery is good for a total of 300 or so charges before it is no good. So there is that to think about when making the switch from a regular Bic lighter to plasma lighters.
Conclusion
Finally, we went over the top plasma lighter I’ve found: the explorer plasma lighter review and tested the lighter out. After using the lighter for a little while it does die faster than I would expect but I think if you use it as a secondary lighter with a Bic or something then only use this explorer plasma in case of emergencies it’ll be a good lighter to have.
Overall, a decent lighter. Really cool to take on a camping trip or something, since it has a lanyard and can unclip when you are using it more than one time. Also, if you have a solar charger for small devices, this is good for a few hundred charges, in retro spec, it is longer lasting than a lot of other lighters, but charging every few days, if you use it a fair amount will be something to expect with these types of lighters.
