They say to pack a sheet of aluminum in your survival kit but what they don’t tell you is how difficult it is to make a container out of tin foil. Have you ever tried origami with paper? It’s a bit like that when you are trying to make something to drink out of.
In this post, we will teach you how to make a container out of aluminum foil for drinking water and boiling it over your fire and you can use it to cook with too! The best part is all you need is a tiny square sheet.
Being able to make a container out of tin foil to drink out of, is a handy survival skill everyone should know how to do. It will be a way to purify and drink water so you don’t become sick or die of dehydration.
How To Make A Tin Foil Container For Drinking And Cooking
Starting out – Get a square piece of tin foil about a foot long. A good thing to do here is to double over the layer of tin foil.
Now you will take a corner and make a triangle. It doesn’t have to be perfectly even or look that pretty as you can see in mine it is rough. Try to avoid creasing the seem when folding too hard cause we will need to unfold it eventually.
Make sure you pull out some more tin foil if needed before cutting, now with your folded triangle, fold it once more.
Note: Most people mess this part up, this is two layers so you need to make a second fold before cutting.
Once this part is complete, take a box cutter, or knife or grab a pair of scissors (which is what I did, it leaves a jagged uneven cut) and cut as straight as you can to have this piece that’ll be the right size.
Double it over, and make sure the edge is somewhat squared.
You can fold it over like this, in the above picture. Make sure a nice clean edge, fold it again and make a triangle. Don’t worry about being a master at origami to figure it out.
Now that you have this done, unfold it to look like in the picture.
You can fold your long piece of tin foil now in half. Hopefully, your crease is not as bad as mine!
Fold it in half again to make a triangle like in the picture above.
After you have your triangle, you take this piece and fold it up so that it touches the edge, then you take the other side and fold it like in the image below, (the first one is a bit harder to figure out).
Next, you will take the tops and fold them down like in the image below. Then you fold down the other side too.
If you want to be able to hang this over your campfire, you will need some wire, so to add that to the tin foil cup, a bucket loop wire will work and make things easier.
A roll of brace wire that most have in their bag, you can use this mostly used for trapping even though this type of wire is not very great for trapping. But for this purpose, it’ll work great, so you just wrap it like this here, and will be less bending of the wire. On both sides.
Fold the flaps down, and pull out a little more wire to attach (twist wire onto the piece going around the container), this piece will be the loop that you use to hang and hold the container.
Crease it somewhat decent then attach it, just twist. It will hang over your campfire like a charm and you will be able to use it to purify water so it is drinkable.
There we go. That will be good enough to boil water over your fire and even cook with. Hopefully, you enjoyed this tutorial.
