What are Survival Boots, and Why Use Them?
Survival boots, as the name suggests, are specialized footwear designed to help you endure harsh conditions during survival situations, such as SHTF (S*** Hits the Fan) or when bugging out. Unlike regular shoes, survival boots are built to be rugged and durable, providing maximum protection against environmental threats.
When choosing survival boots for wilderness survival, you need a pair that can withstand extreme weather, rough terrain, and the physical demands of survival activities like climbing, running, and trekking. Here’s why investing in the best survival boots for SHTF is essential:
Protection from the Elements: Survival boots are designed to keep your feet dry, warm, and comfortable, even in challenging conditions. Many boots come with waterproof linings to ensure your feet stay dry when crossing streams or trekking through wet environments.
Comfort for Extended Movement: Whether you’re running, walking, or climbing, the right survival boots provide comfort and support, making it easier to move efficiently without risking foot pain or injury.
Defense Against Environmental Hazards: A good pair of survival boots will protect your feet from sharp objects, insects, and other potential dangers you might encounter in the wilderness.
Reliability in SHTF Situations: When facing an emergency bug-out situation, you’ll be on the move for extended periods. A high-quality pair of boots for SHTF ensures that you can keep moving without worrying about blisters, cold, or wet feet.
In short, survival boots are an essential part of any survival gear setup. They help you stay comfortable, protected, and capable of handling the toughest conditions, whether you’re facing a natural disaster or navigating through rough terrain in a bug-out situation.
Choosing the right survival boots for SHTF or any outdoor survival situation is crucial. The best survival boots are designed to offer protection, comfort, and support while facing challenging environments. Here’s a detailed list of the must-have features to look for in survival boots that will ensure your feet stay comfortable and protected, no matter the terrain.
1. Outer Sole: The Foundation of Survival Boots
The outer sole is the part of the boot that directly contacts the ground. When selecting survival footwear, pay attention to the following:
- Material: Choose between rubber or leather soles that are flexible for easy movement and traction.
- Grip: The outer sole should provide excellent traction and grip on a variety of terrain surfaces.
- Durability: Look for soles that are tear-resistant and durable enough to withstand sharp objects like rocks or glass.
2. Inner Sole: Comfort and Foot Health
The inner sole of survival boots plays a vital role in comfort and foot support. Here’s what to consider:
- Comfort: Ensure the inner sole is comfortable and helps provide a cushioned feel.
- Moisture Absorption: A good inner sole should soak up sweat, improving grip inside the boot and preventing slippage.
- Durability: Choose inner soles that are tough and flexible enough to withstand rigorous outdoor use, without letting any sharp objects pass through.
3. Tongue: Cushioning and Fit
The tongue of the boot, located where you place your foot, plays an essential role in the boot’s overall comfort. Look for boots with:
- Extra Cushioning: A padded or medicated tongue adds extra comfort and prevents discomfort on the top of the foot.
- Fit: The tongue should fit securely with the inner sole to improve overall boot fit and enhance foot grip.
4. Upper Part: Durability and Weather Resistance
The upper part of the survival boot, often made from leather, contributes to both the boot’s aesthetic appeal and functional protection. For the best survival boots, consider:
- Water-Resistant and Tear-Resistant Materials: Ensure the upper part is made of materials that offer both waterproofing and tear resistance.
- Breathability: Look for boots with breathable materials to allow sweat to evaporate, keeping your feet dry and comfortable.
- Temperature Protection: The upper material should provide insulation to protect against extreme temperatures.
5. Laces: Durability and Secure Fit
Survival boot laces are crucial for adjusting fit and comfort. Here’s what to look for:
- Durability: Choose strong laces that can withstand tough conditions without breaking.
- Waterproof and Scratch-Resistant Laces: If possible, opt for waterproof laces that are scratch-resistant to ensure they last longer in harsh environments.

20. Under Armour Valsetz Tactical Military Boot - Best Tactical Design
Features: Tactical Design, 100% Synthetic, Shaft Measures 10″, Lightweight, Molded TPU Toe Cap
We all know the brand Under Armour by now; they have been out for a few years, starting with clothing. They designed the first type of shirt that fits your skin, allowing athletes a more comfortable fit.
Under Armour then got into footwear. I bought a pair of running shoes from them a few years ago, and after owning a pair of Nike’s for 12 long years, I figured it was time to replace them with something else. I got these running shoes from Under Armour and was very disappointed in the quality of comfort. It took Nike several years to get as far as they did, and then a brand came out wanting to get into several markets and put out a shoe that has horrible quality was, for me, not a very good experience, and for that reason, these go last on the list as I can’t voucher for these just from my experience with the running shoes.
However, these boots do look nice. They received a lot of good ratings, and I would be willing to give these boots a try if Under Armour wanted to send me a pair or if I got them as a gift.
Our Score: 4.0

Durable
Cons
Quality and comfort lacking from this brand in their footwear
Price and Quality
When it comes to the price and quality of your boot, some things to look for here are, as a rule of thumb I always went by, is it’s worth trying to save money if the quality is poor. Especially if you’re in a survival situation in which you have crappy boots, it’s going to make for a hellish time.
So, my advice to you is that it’s best to spend a little extra money than to cheap out on something that is going to cause your feet pain and any issues when walking or trekking through the woods or what have you. This way you’ll get the best experience and years of wear out of your survival footwear.
Reputable Brands
When searching for your boot, you should always look at brands that are reputable in manufacturing those specific types of footwear.
Hey, the inexperienced company may not be that well known for manufacturing boots for your intended purpose, so it’s always advised to look for a company that specifically makes these types of boots and overall has high ratings for their product.
Just stick to the companies that you know are going to have the best footwear for your needs.
Comfort
Comfort is the key here. When you’re searching for your first pair of boots, you need to keep in mind that comfort is more important than, say, the manufacture, durability, or what have you.
If you don’t have comfortable boots, then you’re not going to get your money’s worth; it’s as simple as that.
Even some of the boots that might be more durable will not offer the same comfort as boots that claim to be. When looking for comfortable boots, you must always go with comfort, and in that way, after you have been walking for a while or all day at work, your feet will start to toughen up inside the boot, and when you take your boots off, your feet will thank you greatly, and having comfortable boots will help you to keep your feet from getting sore over the years.
Leather Vs Fabric
As we know, weather is tough, allows our feet to breathe easily, and is constructed so boots are very durable when created with leather.
But, with them, any modifications to the boots these days, the materials that are fabric are just as tough as leather and allow the same comfort.
Fabric footwear is not as tough, but it is getting pretty close these days to matching its toughness.
FAQ – Most Asked Questions About Survival Footwear
How should my boots fit?
One of the biggest problems I see people make is they look for boots that don’t fit and for some reason and then they end up purchasing these boots and they wonder why they have blisters and sores under their feet.
Boots are not the same as sneakers so you have to think of them differently and you have to be aware that you have to break them in first because it doesn’t matter if they are brand new they will not be comfortable from the very beginning.
When trying new boots out for the first time you should wear thick socks instead of breaking them in add the Fitbit you should seek to feel is a nice snug fit except for your heel, your hero is the only part that should feel natural inside the boot and will eventually break in a little more in time.
Should boots feel tight?
Boots should feel snug, a lot of beginners will purchase boots that are too small and they end up causing pain to their feet in the long run. You should be able to put your feet inside the pooh have a little wiggle room for your toes and the ball of your foot should sit at the widest part of the boot you should always remember to wear I figured Paris talks or double up on your normal socks when breaking in boots great.
What is the best brand of boots?
The answer to the question would be that it’s too much of broad a question. But, I mean if you’re wondering what the best survival boot is or tracking Boot, that is another is no other question on its own but as far as the best boot for survival is concerned. Do you want to know what the best women’s boots are? Well, some of the most popular trekking shoes for women are made by Columbia or Timberland. Other than that there aren’t many great outdoor boots for women yet, but they seem to become more popular lately, so I suggest that you buy smaller sizes in men’s boots.
One pair of Women’s boots for survival would be the XPETI mid-high top waterproof boots for outdoor use.
How much do boots cost?
On average the typical boot for outdoor use is in the range of $180 – $350. For the best boots that offer both comfort and quality. Of course, you can buy cheaper boots than the price range just mentioned, but you will probably not get as good of quality and the comfort won’t be able to compare to some of the higher-end boots you can get.
What are the most comfortable boots?
It’s a matter of opinion when it comes down to it. I personally think the Salomon Quest 4D 3 GORE is one of the most comfortable boots I’ve ever owned and I don’t think I would switch to another company even if they were more budget-friendly.
